Presentation on politics of Romani representation at NECS Annual Conference 2026

For the first time, the Network of European Cinema and Media Studies (NECS), one of Europe’s largest conferences in visual studies, featured two panels dedicated to Romani cinema and the politics of representation in casting, streaming series, film production, and film festivals. The conference took place at the Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry from June 18 to 20.

Mariana Sabino-Salazar presented in the panel “Conditional Visibility Across Europe With a Global Impact: The Case of Roma,” alongside Radmila Mladenova and Andra Drǎghiciu. She also chaired the panel “Open your eyes. Romani filmic self-representation and agency,” with presentations by Tamara Moya Jorge, Lidia Merás, and Bohumira Smidakova.
